Dryers

Your dryer is one of the most fire-prone appliances in your home. Regular vent cleaning and simple maintenance habits keep it running safely and efficiently.

Common Issues

Dryer Takes Too Long

A clogged lint trap, blocked vent hose, or dirty exhaust duct. Clean the lint trap before every load and deep-clean the vent system annually.

Dryer Not Heating

A blown thermal fuse (often caused by a clogged vent), a failed heating element, or a faulty thermostat. Check the vent first — restricted airflow is the #1 cause.

Dryer Making Loud Noises

Worn drum rollers, a frayed belt, or loose baffles inside the drum. A thumping sound usually means the rollers need replacing.

Clothes Coming Out Wrinkled

Overloading, leaving clothes sitting after the cycle ends, or a dryer that's too hot. Remove clothes promptly and don't overfill.

Dryer Shuts Off Early

An overheating thermostat, clogged vent restricting airflow, or a failing moisture sensor. Clean the vent and sensor bar first.

Burning Smell from Dryer

Lint buildup near the heating element or in the vent duct. Stop using the dryer immediately, clean all lint from the system, and inspect the vent.

Maintenance Tips

1

Clean the Dryer Vent Annually

Clogged dryer vents are the #1 cause of dryer fires. Disconnect the vent hose and clean it thoroughly at least once a year.

2

Clean the Lint Trap Every Load

A clogged lint trap reduces efficiency by up to 30% and is a fire hazard. Clean it before or after every single load.

3

Inspect the Vent Hose

Check that the vent hose isn't kinked, crushed, or disconnected from the wall. Replace flexible foil hoses with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct.

4

Clean the Moisture Sensor

The sensor bars inside the drum can get coated with dryer sheet residue. Wipe them with rubbing alcohol every few months for accurate drying.

5

Don't Overload

Overloading restricts airflow, increases drying time, and puts extra strain on the motor and belt. Fill to about 3/4 capacity.

Warning Signs — When to Call a Pro

If you notice any of these, it may be time for professional help.

Clothes take more than one cycle to dry
The dryer or laundry room feels unusually hot
Burning smell from the dryer
Lint accumulating around the outside vent flap
The top of the dryer is hot to the touch during a cycle
Visible lint buildup inside the drum or door area
